Signcrafter
Barbara Ryder owner/operator of
Ryders' A GOOD SIGN;
Author of 2 books of poetry&prose,
Painter of scenery & abstract acrylics
Polished her craft when lettering was
an art....
2-time winner of showcard (window display) competitions, she
established a reputation and teaching appointment with the 'Signgraphics' team at George Brown College in Toronto.
Although Barbaras' love of signcraft has remained constant
through the years evolving from charcoal sketches and
brush lettering, to computer layouts and vinyl,
she remains true to her art.
During her teaching years, she commuted back and forth
from Millbrook Ont, where she operated Ryders' Signs
from her studio on Main St. When budget cutbacks
ended the George Brown position, she took a 3 year position
as manager of Carver Creek design in Bobcaygeon where she
enjoyed painting once more, illustrations and lettering on
high-end carved and sandblasted signs.
Barbara purchased a beautiful century home she found
close to city hall in Peterborough Ont; where her
singer-songwriter daughter Serena often performs.
Locals will remember Serenas' older sister Tiffany from her years with the Lansdowne Nutrition House, and Barbaras'
husband 'handyman extrordinaire'. "The girls would've
loved living here" says Barbara, rather than the commute
from Millbrook. Still, when they visit, the family, including
Barbaras' oldest Daniel, enjoy the scenic walk over the bridge
to Nichols oval where it's so serene and incredibly beautiful.
Barbaras' clientele, though small and personable, bring the
challenge that keeps her enthusiastic about signs.
She now leaves the electric, neon, formed letters
and installation on scaffold to her competition; concentrating
more on fast custom lettering & graphics for magnetic signs,
vehicles, vinyl and paper banners, coroplast & PVC which is
available in a multitude of colours and sizes. She loves the
informality of working from her home where customers and friends alike
are welcome to come and share input in their requirements...and
enthusiasm about 'SIGNS'
"Life doesn't get much better than this" says Barbara.
