Unfortunately, due to the recent death of my Mother on July 4th and health problems which needed my immediate attention, this particular issue of our newsletter missed its deadline. We apologize for the inconvenience. Reverse discrimination??. There is a current "push" by some in the martial arts community to eliminate the titles of "Professor" & "Doctor" from the martial arts vocabulary. Since one of my very first "Fathers" in the arts was the late PROFESSOR SIG KUFFERATH who received his Professorship in the Hawaiian art of DANZAN RYU JU-JITSU prior to being elected the Heir of the system, I really have a BIG problem with this. Other martial artists like DR. RICHARD KIM, DR. PETER URBAN and PROFESSOR WALLY JAY as an example, also carry these titles and do so with the respect of martial artists worldwide. .The problem?. It seems that some are confusing the issue of academic degrees which require at least 8 years of education in an accredited Institution with the Doctorates and Professorships earned in the martial arts which are tied into "time and grade" and that take a great deal longer to earn. As one leader of this movement in New York told me, it is making "we" martial artists look "bad". .Unfortunately, for this gentleman and others who follow the same way of thinking, "Professorships" and "Doctorates" have been around for a LONG TIME, with many high ranking marital artists in Japan, Korea, China, the Philippines and Hawaii carrying these titles. Not to mention, the other countries of the world which are doing the same thing. So, the solution seems simple to me and to this Council……When you stipulate "Doctor" or "Professor" as your title, make sure you specify that the title is "martial arts related". Particularly, if you are dealing with someone who is unfamiliar with such things. ALSO, if your title is not from an ACCEPTED martial arts source ("papermill" operations fall into this "not acceptable" category) or does not match your ranking or age, we will not recognize the title. Period. The problem is one of whether you carry a legitimate "Doctorate" or "Professorship" in the martial arts and not one of getting rid of the titles altogether.……With the advent of the World Wide Web and all that it entails comes something new to the martial arts world, the "cyber slanderer". .I am sure that you have seen these sites. More often than not, they are run by individuals with either a personal vendetta or an agenda of some sort. The problem with these sites is that most of them are "member only" types, where the individual being attacked cannot respond. PROFESSOR GARY DILL and HANSHI LOU ANGEL of our Council have been the latest to be attacked. Each has a history of martial arts which cannot be disputed. Each is "historical" from the standpoint of their martial arts. Gary’s JEET KUNE DO lineage comes directly from the "Oakland years" when he studied with James Lee. Lou’s lineage in GOJU goes back to Yamaguchi and PETER URBAN. SORRY "Cyber Slanderers". You CAN’T CHANGE HISTORY with just a few angry words on the internet. These gentlemen are "what they are" and all the ranting and raving in the world won’t change that. .

Jose won GOLD in both the Self-Defense & Fighting Divisions and has qualified for the U.S. JU-JITSU TEAM to represent the USA at the NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS against Canada and Mexico. GRANDMASTER RON "THE BLACK DRAGON" VAN CLIEF from New York has another film coming out on Cable TV. .He was in Mexico recently shooting scenes for it. The movie is called "RAGE". Be watching for it! The "United Martial Arts Referees Association (U.M.A.R.A.) will be hosting a special tournament at Buena Regional High School in New Jersey on Saturday – October 6th to raise funds for MASTER MARTY MANUEL. Marty, who is a highly respected Karate teacher & member of our Masters Division from New Jersey has a rare medical condition which has left him paralyzed from the neck down.
